Composer and ethnomusicologist Eleni Karaindrou writes the following about Giota Vei: “She was born in Platystomo, Lamia and has lived in Athens since she was seventeen years old. She was introduced to folk singing by her grandmother. In the years between then and her first public appearance, she found and learned folk songs from all over Greece. Some of them, rare and unpublished, were entrusted to her by folklorists and ethnomusicologists. This treasure trove (around 600 songs), which her practiced memory and innate technique helped her to acquire, was kept persistently by Giota Vei away from easy commercialism”.

Η Ελένη Καραίνδρου γράφει για τη Γιώτα Βέη: «Γεννήθηκε στο Πλατύστομο της Λαμίας. Ζει στην Αθήνα από τα δεκαεπτά της χρόνια. Στο δημοτικό τραγούδι μυήθηκε από τη γιαγιά της. Στα χρόνια που μεσολάβησαν μέχρι τη δημόσια εμφάνιση της έβρισκε και μάθαινε δημοτικά τραγούδια από ολόκληρη την Ελλάδα. Μερικά απ’ αυτά, σπάνια και ανέκδοτα, της τα εμπιστεύτηκαν λαογράφοι και εθνομουσικολόγοι. Αυτό το θησαυρό (γύρω στα 600 τραγούδια) που η εξασκημένη μνήμη της και η έμφυτη τεχνική της τη βοήθησε ν’ αποκτήσει, η Γιώτα Βέη τον κράτησε μ’ επιμονή μακριά από την εύκολη εμπορικότητα».
