Στη δυτική όχθη του Νείλου κοντά στις Θήβες, βρίσκονται οι Κολοσσοί του Μέμνωνα: δύο επιβλητικά αγάλματα, φιγούρες του Φαραώ Αμένοφη του Γ’. Έγιναν διάσημες στην αρχαιότητα όταν το ένα άγαλμα άρχισε να παράγει έναν μυστηριώδη ήχο κάθε πρωί. Οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες πίστευαν ότι ήταν το τραγούδι του νεκρού ήρωα Μέμνωνα προς τη μητέρα του Ηώ (Αυγή). Πιθανότατα όμως οι ήχοι οφείλονταν στην υγρασία και τη θερμική διαστολή του λίθου, που ενισχυόταν από την πρωινή ομίχλη του Νείλου.
